Electrical OEM Materials for Electrified Transportation
rn Electrical OEM Materials for Electrified Transportation
rnrn As the demand for more energy efficient transportation -- automotive, trains, ships, aircraft, etc. – continues to grow, the growth of more sophisticated electric and hybrid systems is accelerating. 3M recognizes that the industry has aggressive goals to improve efficiency, power density, energy density and costs for key systems such as electric motors, batteries, and power conversion devices (including inverters, converters and motor drives).
rnrn Although these goals place demanding challenges on the materials and components used in these systems, the 3M Electrical Markets Division offers many industry-leading electrical insulating, sealing and connecting solutions for these systems and wire harnesses.

rn Excellent Flame Resistance
rn Electrical transportation systems must incorporate safety features to prevent flame propagation and possible explosion. 3M has a variety of product solutions with excellent flame resistance properties – including flexible insulation and insulating electrical tapes for motor, transformer, battery packs and power conversion devices and heat shrink insulation along with electrical tapes for wire harnesses. The 3M™ ThermaVolt, ThermaVolt AR, and Flame Barrier FRB Series Insulations, for example, have low smoke, low toxicity and high limiting oxygen index (LOI) as needed for confined space operating locations, such as subways. Electrical insulating tapes carry UL component certifications up to 200°C, UL Class N.
rn Higher Power Density Motors
rn The goal of making electric motors smaller and lighter pushes them to their thermal limit. Good thermal management is critical to reducing the failure risk to motors due to higher operating temperatures. Motor insulating materials from 3M have higher thermal conductivity than typical meta-aramid materials used to insulate and dissipate heat from windings. 3M has multiple solutions with these benefits to give you more options.
rn 3M Solutions
rn Look to 3M for a broad range of insulation types – including flexible insulation, insulating and conductive tapes, heat shrink tubing, mastic pads and electrical insulating resins – so that you are more likely to find a solution that works well in your application. Moreover, many 3M solutions are designed for easier insertion and application, helping provide a more efficient manufacturing process.
rn These products can help enable greater efficiency, power density, safety, and other key factors required for these extremely demanding applications. In addition, 3M can service multinational manufacturers through their global distribution, technical support and supply chain assistance.
